Writers' Association of The Gambia The Association shall be a
voluntary, non-profit-making, non-partisan, non-religious and non-segregationist
organization. The registered office of the Association shall be situated in the
Greater Banjul Area of The Gambia. The Association shall aim to serve the cause
of the advancement of writers in The Gambia and to promote a progressive
literary culture among Gambians, Africans and the rest of the world’s peoples. It
shall promote, encourage and facilitate creative and other technical writing in
The Gambia; promote links between Gambian writers to enhance their collective
and individual literary capacities, productivity and interests, nationally and internationally;
promote the writing of technical, research and school materials; co-ordinate
the publication and dissemination of literary texts by Gambians; establish high
standards in the writing, production and publication of texts from Gambian writers
residing in The Gambia; foster and enhance the patriotic and constructive role
of Gambian and other resident writers in national development; ensure the
protection by law of the works and originality of Gambian writers, in particular,
and of other writers in The Gambia, in general; monitor the stringent
application of copyright safeguards; facilitate documentation and preservation
of all published materials by Gambian writers and when possible archiving them;
present the Lenrie Peters Memorial Award annually to a deserving author and
other incentives to writers; do all things that helps to promote the aims and
objectives of the association. |
Membership details Membership is opened to all Gambian writers resident in The Gambia and abroad, who subscribe to and comply with the goals and objectives of the Association. Reputable expatriate writers, who are resident in The Gambia and support the objectives of the Association, can apply for membership as associate members. Membership fees apply thus:
All payments should be made before a member is officially considered thus. The association can only support and defend rights of its members. As soon as the association is launched, only members are kept on the mailing list and duly informed of immediate activities. programme officer at the Gambia National Commission for UNESCO (UNESCO-NATCOM),
has called on Gambian writers to be good ambassadors of peace after
successfully acquiring skills and knowledge from a week-long fiction writing
workshop. “Having the world’s strongest weapon, the pen, you should struggle
for peace and progress of society through your writings,” he said. Mr. Jobe
made this call at the close of a five-day workshop on fiction writing organised

WAG to train members on fiction writing TODAY on 29 April, 2011 03:56:00 The Writers’ Association of The Gambia has concluded plans to organize a five-day capacity building programme for its members. The workshop which will focus on Fiction Writing is being supported through a grant from The Gambia National Commission for UNESCO. The workshop which will hold between Monday May 9 and Friday May 13, 2011 will be conducted by Pearson education Publishers. According to the organizers, the training programme is expected to have impacts on participants’ future writing. It would also include review of short stories by members. The Writers’ Association of the
Gambia (WAG) has received a grant from the Gambia National Commission for
UNESCO (NATCOM) to conduct a workshop on creative writing with emphasis on
fiction writing. The workshop was conducted by
Pearson Education Publishers UK from Monday May 9 to Friday May 13, 2011 at the
Senegambia Beach hotel. Sally Howes, Watermark Publishing, publishing and
