about meMr Cherno Omar Barry taught for 8 years at the University of The Gambia and was later the Head of the French Department. Mr Barry has completed his PhD (Doctorat nouveau regime) in Comparative Literature with the University of Limoges, France and awaiting the oral examination. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English with the Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Canada and both a Maîtrise-ès-Lettres (Semiology) and a Master II (Comparative Literature) with the University of Limoges in France. Mr Barry started teaching in 1987 and since he has taught in several prestigious schools both private and government. In the course of his research works, he has travelled to several countries ( France, Senegal, Switzerland and the United States of America) to present papers on different issues ranging from African literature, sociology of education and comparative literature. He has equally contributed immensely in several publications. Several of his articles have provoked intellectual discourse on issues ranging from literary production in The Gambia, a review of the curriculum and other issues relating to the Gambian system of education. Among the organisations he subscribes to are the African Literature Association (ALA), the Modern Language Association (MLA), the International Society for Oral Literatures in Africa (ISOLA) and the Writers’ Association of The Gambia (WAG). He speaks and writes fluently in French and English. He is freelance interpreter/translator. He has represented UNESCO in several conferences on Culture and Education. He is the founder of the UNESCO Club at the University of The Gambia. He helped pioneered the revival of the Writers’ Association of The Gambia (WAG) and The Gambia Music Association (GAMMA). He presently works as Programme Officer at The Gambia National Commission for UNESCO. |
